LinkedIn Prospect Screening: Define the Ideal Customer Before Building a Contactable List

Define who qualifies as a precise prospect

Start with a written ideal customer profile rather than a search box. Specify industry and use case, company size or stage, target role and position in the decision chain, and geographic and language market. A manufacturer exporting equipment differs from a component supplier even within one industry, so more precise profiles produce more useful filters and clearer contact decisions.

Combine LinkedIn filters instead of relying on one keyword

Use structured industry, location, company size, function and tenure together, with keywords as supporting context. Build a company pool first, then distinguish procurement, operations and technical owners. For multilingual markets, add region and language context. Before exporting, sample profiles for current employment, recent activity and relevant responsibilities so obviously stale records do not pollute the workflow.

Review the person, company and interaction signals

At the person level, check whether title and experience match a decision or influence role and whether the profile appears abandoned. At the company level, verify size, business direction and recent developments against the profile. Activity in relevant industry discussions can show that the person remains professionally reachable. Removing departed, mismatched and dormant records is more useful than expanding volume.

Validate contact methods before outreach

Contact only people relevant to a legitimate business purpose, control frequency and follow local data and marketing rules. Before phone or SMS contact, validate whether the number is current and appropriate, distinguishing direct, switchboard and personal mobile use. Separate prospect selection from contact validation so a strong profile is not confused with a usable or authorized channel.

Make the workflow reusable

Maintain templates for each product line and market with the profile, filter combinations, exclusion rules and sample-review standard. Record the source filter and review result for each addition, then compare response and connection outcomes over time. The goal is not the largest list but a stable flow of small batches whose profile, status and contact method are genuinely usable.
